Hiking the Happy Valley (Ait Bouguemez): A Guide to Morocco’s Berber Heartland

Hidden in the Central High Atlas, the Ait Bouguemez Valley – better known as the Happy Valley – is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Morocco. Green fields, walnut trees, earthen villages and snow-capped peaks create a landscape that feels far away from the busy cities. It is also the home of our team in Azilal, so we know every path. Here is our guide to hiking in the Happy Valley.

Where Is the Happy Valley?

The Ait Bouguemez Valley lies in the province of Azilal, in the heart of the Central High Atlas, at around 1800–2000 m above sea level. It is surrounded by high mountains, including Jbel M’Goun (4071 m), the second highest peak in North Africa. From Marrakech, the drive takes around five hours, often with a stop at the Ouzoud Waterfalls on the way.

Why Is It Called the Happy Valley?

Locals say the name comes from the peaceful life of the valley: fertile land, fresh water from the mountains and a strong community spirit. Life here still follows the rhythm of the seasons – farming, herding and traditional crafts – and visitors are welcomed with genuine Berber hospitality.

What to See and Do

  • Village-to-village hiking: easy trails connect traditional Berber villages built in stone and earth.
  • Sidi Moussa granary: a historic collective granary on a hilltop with a panoramic view over the valley.
  • Dinosaur footprints: the region is part of the M’Goun UNESCO Global Geopark, known for its fossil tracks.
  • Local life: share mint tea and a home-cooked tagine with a local family in a guesthouse.
  • High mountain treks: for experienced hikers, the valley is the starting point to climb M’Goun.

How Difficult Is Hiking in the Happy Valley?

Most valley trails are easy to moderate, with gentle climbs and daily walks of around 4 to 6 hours. They are suitable for families and anyone with basic fitness. Mules carry the luggage, so you only need a small day pack. If you are looking for a bigger challenge, our M’Goun summit trek crosses high passes and reaches 4071 m.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and autumn are ideal for valley hikes, with green fields in spring and golden colours in autumn. Summer is pleasant thanks to the altitude and is the best season for high-mountain treks such as M’Goun (June to October). Winters are cold and snowy.
