Day2Marrakech to the Ait Bouguemez valley via Imi n'Ifri2.5 hours

We leave the city behind and drive to the foothills of the central High Atlas. On the way we stop at Imi n’Ifri, a natural limestone bridge carved by the river that still flows under it. We have a picnic after a short walk across the bridge, then drive up into the hidden Ait Bouguemez valley. After mint tea with the muleteers, we walk up the Arous gorge to the pastures of Azib n’Ikiss (2,250 m) and camp for the night.

The bags go on the mules and we climb steadily for about three hours to the Aghouri pass (3,400 m), with our first view of the M’Goun summit. After a slow picnic we follow a nomad path down to the Tarkdit plateau and camp.

The big day. The climb isn’t technical but the trail is steep, and it’s a long, tough mountain day. From the top the view takes in the High Atlas, the Anti-Atlas and the Rose Valley. We go down to the Oulilimt valley to camp.

Note: If you'd rather skip the summit, you can walk with the muleteers to the next camp, an easier walk of about 5–6 hours.
