Agafay Desert, Morocco: A Local Guide to the Stone Desert Near Marrakech

You don’t need to drive nine hours to feel the desert in Morocco. The Agafay Desert starts less than an hour from Marrakech: a rolling landscape of bare stony hills, ochre and pink at sunset, with the snowy High Atlas on the horizon. Here is our local guide to Agafay, and how we ride it on our hike and bike tour.

Quick answer: The Agafay Desert is a stony desert (not sand dunes) about 40 minutes from Marrakech, near the Lalla Takerkoust lake, with wide views of the Atlas Mountains. It is great for gravel riding, short hikes, sunsets and a night in a desert camp. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. We ride into Agafay on the last day of our Hike and Bike: Toubkal and Agafay tour.

Where Is the Agafay Desert?

Agafay lies south-west of Marrakech, between the city and the foothills of the High Atlas, close to the Lalla Takerkoust lake. The drive takes around 40 minutes, which makes it the easiest “desert” to reach from Marrakech.

Is Agafay a Real Desert?

Agafay is a rocky, stony desert, not a sea of sand dunes like the Sahara. Expect bare hills, dry river beds and wide plateaus, with very few trees and a big sky. If you want golden dunes and camels, look at our Sahara desert trek. If you want the desert feeling, the Atlas views and an easy trip from Marrakech, Agafay is perfect.

Things to Do in Agafay

  • Gravel and mountain biking: the dirt roads roll up and down between the hills, with very little traffic.
  • Sunset: the hills turn pink and orange, with the Atlas behind them.
  • A night in a desert camp: comfortable tents, dinner under the stars and a very quiet night.
  • Lalla Takerkoust lake: a lunch stop by the water, on the edge of the desert.

Riding Into Agafay on Our Hike and Bike Tour

The night is in a comfortable desert camp, and the next morning you drive back to Marrakech for a guided city tour.
