Why ride here

Why Cycling in Morocco Is Worth the Trip

Few countries change as fast under your wheels as Morocco. In a single week you can climb out of Marrakech into the High Atlas, roll past snow-capped peaks above 4,000 m, drop into red-earth valleys lined with kasbahs, and finish on sandy tracks at the edge of the Sahara. The distances between these worlds are short, and most of them are linked by quiet roads and dirt tracks that see more donkeys and shepherds than cars.

Biking in Morocco is also about the people. You ride through Amazigh (Berber) villages where children run beside the bike, stop for mint tea in family homes, and sleep in guesthouses and kasbahs run by local families. Our guides grew up in these mountains: they speak Arabic, Tamazight, French and English, know every water point and shortcut, and turn a bike ride into a real meeting with the country.

And Morocco is easy to reach. Marrakech is three to four hours by plane from most European cities, there is little or no time difference, and the riding season runs through spring and autumn, exactly when it is cold and wet at home.

Ways to ride

Types of Bike Tours in Morocco

Gravel, mountain bike, road or e-bike: the same landscapes, ridden the way you like. Every tour runs with a guide and a 4x4 support vehicle.

Gravel Bike Tours

Our speciality, and the reason for our name. Old caravan pistes, farm tracks and quiet tarmac between the Atlas and the Sahara. See all our gravel bike tours in Morocco, starting with the Caravan Road.

Mountain Biking

Rocky singletrack, mule paths and big descents in the High Atlas around Imlil, Ouirgane and the Toubkal massif. Private MTB tours run on request. See mountain biking in Morocco.

Road Cycling

Long, smooth climbs over the Tizi n'Tichka and Tizi n'Test passes, the Ourika valley and the road to Oukaimeden. Private road bike tours on your dates. See road cycling in Morocco.

E-Bike Tours

Electric assist flattens the Atlas climbs, so couples and groups with different levels can ride together. Most of our routes work on an e-bike. See e-bike tours in Morocco.

Where to ride

The Best Regions for Biking in Morocco

Our tours link the regions below. Each one has its own terrain, season and character.

High Atlas & Toubkal

The backbone of Morocco, with North Africa's highest summit, Toubkal (4,167 m). Expect long climbs on switchback roads, terraced Berber villages, walnut trees and rivers. Ideal for mountain biking and road climbs, and for combining a summit hike with riding on our Toubkal & Agafay hike and bike tour.

Agafay Desert

A stone desert of rolling ochre hills less than an hour from Marrakech, with the Atlas on the horizon. Wide gravel tracks, almost no traffic and spectacular sunsets: the perfect warm-up or finale for a tour. Read our Agafay Desert guide.

Dades Gorges & Rose Valley

Red canyon walls, the famous Dades switchbacks and the rose gardens of Kelaat M'Gouna. Some of the most photogenic gravel riding in the country, ridden on the Caravan Road tour. See our Dades Gorges guide.

Draa Valley & the Sahara

The longest palm grove in Morocco runs from Agdz to Zagora and M'Hamid, where the tracks turn to sand and the Chegaga dunes begin. Kasbahs, oasis villages and a night under the desert stars. See our Draa Valley guide.

M'Goun Geopark & Happy Valley

The UNESCO M'Goun Global Geopark in the Azilal region: dinosaur footprints, the Ait Bouguemez “Happy Valley”, the turquoise Bin El Ouidane lake and the Ouzoud waterfalls. Our home region, ridden on the Happy Valley hike and bike tour. See our M'Goun Geopark guide.

Jebel Saghro

A volcanic massif between the Dades and the Draa, with black rock, table mountains and nomad camps. Remote, rough and wild, it is the most adventurous section of our gravel routes, best ridden in spring and autumn.

Cycling Tours in Morocco: How Our Bike Tours Work

Morocco has thousands of kilometres of quiet dirt roads and old caravan tracks, which makes it one of the best places for a bike tour outside Europe. On our guided cycling tours you ride from the High Atlas to the palm groves of the Draa Valley, over the volcanic Jebel Saghro and to the dunes of the Sahara, with a 4x4 support vehicle behind the group every day.

All our bike tours last 8 days and start and finish in Marrakech, with 30 to 68 km of riding a day. Choose the Caravan Road Gravel Bike Tour (281 km) for pure gravel, the Atlas to Sahara cycling tour for the most riding days, or one of our hike and bike tours if your group mixes walkers and riders. You can ride a gravel bike, a mountain bike or an e-bike, your own or rented through us.

The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Groups are 2 to 16 riders, and every tour can be booked as a private trip on your own dates. For routes, bikes and tyres, read our guide to cycling in Morocco.

Who it's for

Which Bike Tour Is Right for You?

You do not need to be a racer to enjoy a cycling tour in Morocco. What matters is that you are comfortable riding several hours a day, several days in a row. The support vehicle is always close, so a tired rider can rest for a section and rejoin the group later.

Private & custom bike tours

Every tour can run as a private trip for your family, friends or club, on the dates you choose. We can also build a fully custom route: shorter or longer, more gravel or more tarmac, a mountain bike tour in the High Atlas, a road cycling week over the big passes, or a mix of riding and trekking.

Tell us your level, dates and group size and we will send you a route and a price, usually within 24 hours.

When to ride

Best Time for a Bike Tour in Morocco

Spring (March to May) is the classic cycling season. The valleys are green, almond and apple trees are in flower, the Rose Valley blooms in May and the temperatures are pleasant from the Atlas to the desert. Snow can remain on the highest passes until April.

Autumn (September to November) is our other favourite. The summer heat is gone, the light is golden, the date harvest starts in the Draa Valley and the skies are usually clear. It is the best time for combining the mountains and the Sahara.

Winter (December to February) brings sunny, mild days in the south and the Agafay, but cold nights and snow in the High Atlas. Desert and low-altitude routes work well; high mountain routes depend on the weather.

Summer (June to August) is very hot in the south and in the desert. If you want to ride in summer, choose the High Atlas or the M'Goun region, where the altitude keeps the days cooler, and start early in the morning.

For month-by-month details, read our best time to cycle in Morocco guide.

A day on tour

What a Typical Riding Day Looks Like

After breakfast at the guesthouse, your guide briefs the group on the day's route. You ride 30 to 68 km, with regular stops for photos, water and fruit from the support vehicle. Lunch is often a picnic in the shade of a walnut tree or a tagine in a village.

In the afternoon you reach the night's stop: a family guesthouse, a kasbah or a desert camp. Your luggage is already there. Time for a shower, mint tea and a Moroccan dinner, before the next day's adventure.

Practical Tips for Cycling in Morocco

Bikes. You can bring your own bike or rent one through us. For gravel tours, tyres of 40 mm or wider are best, since some tracks are stony or sandy. Mountain bikes are best with front or full suspension. If you bring your bike, pack it in a box or bag; our team will help you assemble it in Marrakech.

Roads and safety. Most of our routes follow quiet secondary roads and dirt tracks. On busier roads the guide rides in front and the support vehicle behind the group. A helmet is mandatory, and we recommend gloves, sunglasses and a bright jersey.

What to pack. Padded shorts, layers for cold mornings in the mountains, a windproof jacket, sun cream, a buff against dust and a small backpack or frame bag for the day. Nights can be cold in the Atlas and the desert even in spring.

Culture. Morocco is a welcoming country. Cover shoulders and knees when you walk through villages, ask before taking photos of people, and enjoy the mint tea: it is an important part of the hospitality.
